Battery becoming flat / Amaron 60 DIN / FIAT Petra

In two instances within the last three months, My Petra's battery has gone flat.

The battery is Amaron 60 DIN, just 18 months old, and the car was not started for about two weeks, in both cases. Before that the car was being sparingly used for a month...

How long will the charge last in a battery in good condition, if the vehicle is not started?

It's a tough question - but here are the points for good battery care:

    1. If car is used for short runs with repeated start stop cycle, battery WILL die faster. The workaround is either to leave the car running in idle at signals or take for a long drive on a weekend.
    2. If you have to park the car for long periods (two weeks or more, ideally anything more than a week) - especially where equipped with Remote Locks, it is better to unplug one terminal (not sure but I think the -ve terminal); electronics drain out the battery.
    3. Under unavoidable circumstances where the car needs to be parked for weeks or months together, it is better to start and idle the engine for about 15 minutes every week so that the battery is kept charged.

To sum up, anything longer than a week of a parked car is not good for a battery. This is my general understanding.

Do check for any wiring issues (especially if anything was touched recently) which may be draining out the battery. In my Palio / Punto (now sold), the car stereo would start even without the key inserted into the ignition key (as far as my memory serves me right). This itself is enough to drain the battery if the car is not used regularly and long enough to recharge the battery.

    Thank you!

In my case, the only solution seems to be to run it as much as possible and switch on and let the battery charge.

I do not like to unplug the terminal, as it resets the clock and spoils the stereo settings. .

Its quite a chore to bring the stereo settings to what I like.

    Anyway, Thanks for the reply...

Remember Joe sir mentioning about a trickle charger--a DIY project to keep the battery charging and in good health for long, when the car is parked. You can contact him for a DIY project over a couple of beers .... You need a power source though to plug it in.

Deepak, it shouldn't die out so soon. So either like Vijeth said the battery charge is draining out or its not charging completely.

So check for any electronic stuffs like audio system or any other stuffs connected to your battery.

Also check your Alternator if battery is getting charged properly. Maybe you can try swapping another battery for a week to reproduce this issue.
