KK-Kovalam/Trivandrum/Varkala-KK? Vivekananda Ashram got some bad reviews lately - why not Tri Sea Lodge? AFAIK, Top Slip is open all the time. No homestays in Top Slip, only the TN Govt acco. You will get better acco - forest huts - in Paramabikulam across the border in KL, but with prior bookings. Green Valley Hotel at Valparai, not a great place, but cheap, since all the bungalows in Valparai are very expensive. Wildlife sightings in Thekkady will be poor during monsoons. Thekkady-Gavi-Parunthampara-Vagamon-Thekkady is an extended circuit. You can stay at either Painavu (Hotel Stonehenge) or Nadugani (Greenberg Resort) off Idukki Dam region

    1. Go for either Tri Sea or TTDC Tamil Nadu. Both are good.
Two and a half days are a lot in Kanyakumari! You can spend a full day for TVM/Kovalam/Poovar as HVK said.
    2. Budget accommodation in Valparai- either stay in Green Hill hotel (in town centre, congested environment) or either go to Frank Benjamin's Misty Creek. Prasanna Narayanan was there recently.

If you are looking for Vivekananda Kendra accommodation, it should be booked well in advance, usually full. There are a lot of places around KKM which you can cover, try and see vattakottai. Valparai accommodation, you can try Misty creek, decent place.

Prasanna : What is the charges that you paid for Misty Creek ? If I drive to Valparai and then search for accommodation would it be tough ask , considering July would be lean season . In Kanyakumari Vivekananda Kendra Ashram , can seven people can be accommodated in a single cottage ... Are these big enough? What are the car charges from Coimbatore to Valparai and Valparai to Chalakudi?

Thank you Gino. That is very helpful

Can't say whether it would be tough to get accommodation in Valparai. You can still get in, go to the homestays and bargain. But, yet they will be costlier than the hotels.
Why not reserve it in Misty Creek or Green Hill?

Thanks Adithya Ramesh , I will talk with both of them tomorrow. Just to guess what could be the expenses of the accommodation, can you please give me any hints , so that it will be helpful to bargain with them. Thanks to all of you for your valuable suggestions.

We went there during off-season and brought down a Rs.2000 per day (homestay, 3 bedroom) to Rs.2500 for two days. But i'm not sure about that bargain during season.

Mithun Chatterjee Mind you, this isn't a very great place. So, i'm not suggesting that homestay to anyone. It was just a 3BHK house. May be 5 years old. No view points. Has a decent toilet. Car park on the road (which was safe enough). Behind the homestay was a small river running.

Misty creek is decent, you could talk and bring down the charges. There is one more homestay called Deepika's near Sholayar Dam, keep their contact number too. If you want a luxurious stay I would suggest you look at tea estate bungalows, again you need prior booking. Coimbatore to Valparai you can hire a cab, but unless you stay with the same cab, you might find it difficult to get a cab at Valparai. Make sure the cab has permits done/possible since you would enter Kerala from Valparai.

    Re: Chennai - Kerala trips

    Hi Mithun,

A bit of clarification regarding your travel will help....

Are the seven members family or friends.

Are you interested in pilgrimage or like ancient temples, etc.

Does nature and wildlife interest you and your group

What kind of budget are you looking at... per day per person

Based in Chennai or visiting... any knowledge about the local language

In general, if you book a round trip cab from Chennai, it will work out better than hopping from place to place as all cabs will charge return fare.

    Best wishes
