    re: Useful Apps for Smartphones

Number one of my list is TrueCaller.

This may be passe now but when I had talked about it during one of the Pune meets more than a year ago, I was surprised to know that quite a few people did not know about this app. It works well if you have 3G or Wifi on your phone.

True caller searches through the phone directories of other members who have installed this app for the owner of the number calling you. So once your phone rings, and you see an unknown number, TrueCaller will poll the databases of other members who have the number registered on their phones and provide you the same name on your phone. So this way, you know who the 'unknown' number is. How cool is that

It is available for iOS, BB and Androids as well.

    re: Useful Apps for Smartphones

    Hi all,

Let me start with a useful app for Mumbaikars.

    1. This one is m-indicator.
This one is useful if you are using public transport like rail and bus. If you are at a train station you can find which train would be coming to the station and at what time. So, I can relax and wait for a Andheri train to come at a station like Dadar knowing that it will come only after a 10 minutes.
It also gives information of bus routes. You can get info bus no. wise or you can input the name of the stop you are at and the destination stop. It will give you the bus no.
It also has other features but I have not explored them.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d..._result#?t=W10.
Pros - gives timing of your trains
Cons - Not useful in case of changing trains from western to central or harbour

    2. Smart Shehar Mumbai Trains
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d..._result#?t=W10.
This app is better than m-indicator as it will gives you details with change over from western to central or harbour and vice versa.

    3. Smart Shehar Mumbai Bus
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...veloper#?t=W10.
This app is again better than M-indicator. It shows the route of the bus on the Map along with the full route. It may also recommend you to use the train and then catch a bus. However, I have not tested the efficiancy on this point.

    Hope this is useful.

    Sid,

True Caller is not passe. It is still being used in my office. One can also notify a marketing call as spam, so when they call again they are unable to connect to you.

Neelay - Have edited the thread title to "Useful Apps for Smartphones"

Unfortunately I've a Nokia E52 phone thats running on Symbian S60 and i've only Whatsapp successfully running in it!

Otherwise for Android/iOS, the m-indicator is quite a popular one.

There is one app called as Astro File manager which works similar to the Desktop PC File Explorer!

    Hi,

These are few of the ones that I use...

Instagram - If you take a lot of pics, this is a must have. You can give different effects to the pics and share them on FB, Twitter, etc.
WhatsApp - Cross platform messenger that needs no introduction.
Google Maps - If you travel a lot, this one is the best.
Flashlight - If you have a phone with a flash, this one converts your flash into a torch. No more fishing for keyholes in the dark.
Flipboard - You can combine your Twitter and FB accounts and add a few more subjects of your choice and you have full-fledged digital magazine.
Linkedin - Again, no intro needed for this.
Skype - Again, no intro needed for this.
Dominos - You can order your pizzas online.
PayTM - You can recharge your own number or anyone else's number with this app.

And then we have tons of games to while away time while sitting at the dentist or doctor or in the Mumbai traffic.
    Cheers

This is a GPS cum social networking app called Waze
It was in the news recently as it was bought over by google
you can use it while driving and update the traffic scenario. Like if there is jam you can update using an icon, if there is a police checking you can update with an icon. It will show you other wazers in the area. You can chat with them. Also if your friends are travelling to the same destination then you can check where they have reached. Not used this as of now. maybe we can test it when we will be having a monsoon meet again.
Currently I am not using it to navigate to new places. But this a fun app. No download of maps required. Also shows the average speed at which traffic is moving on some roads (I assume this would depend on data from tracking some waze users phone via gps)
And its free and Indians love free.

Navigation can be done via gps but map up but updating status and chat will require internet.

Waze was an Israeli start-up which was brought over by Google. In Israel, Waze has 100% penetration which even for a small country like Israel is phenomenal.

The only sad part is the Blackberry app for Waze sucks big time. Works wonderfully well on iOS, Android though.

Check DotSIS : Next Generation Mobile Forum for S60 apps. I used extensively when I had E50 and 6630.

    Re: Useful Apps for Smartphones

Do give a feedback on Waze.
With google taking over I think BB users may benefit.
Or they may get the features ontp google maps
Although I use something else for going to an unknown destination, which i cannot discuss on this forum as it is a cracked software.

I will check for ease of finding my destination.

    Hi,

I have downloaded Waze and started using it. But, it doesnt allow us to easily feed in new destinations or does it??
I am at a little loss using this app... I'll update as soon as I can.

you can feed in new destinations. I feel the sygic navigation by map my india is the best. But I use waze even when I am going home as it shows if the route i will be using has traffic snarls. Sometimes i re-route based on the icons on my route. also if I am stuck in traffic i can update the status for other users who may use the route.
