    Re: Useful Apps for Smartphones

Since this is a car forum i am posting the following useful apps:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...en.policealert
Mumbai Traffic Police App: Add your registration number and you can see traffic violation details on the app. Was flagged by the RTO for parking in a no parking zone. I insisted on a receipt for the fine. He asked me to use the app. The violation immediately appeared in the app. Once paid the app changed the status to "Paid".

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...nic.mparivahan
mParivahan: You can find details of a vehicle by entering its registration no. For your own cars you can download the RC. Also you can download your drivers license.
Since i do no have the Creta RC book, i have downloaded the same in this app.

Both the above apps have more features and uses. Please do check the app store for the same.

A weather app which is very useful is Skymet Weather (https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....indianweather)
This app gives you weather updates and alerts. Also you can view the Insat satellite images to check the weather. Lets you know if you are going to get stuck in rains or if you will have a sunny day. It also gives you the regular local temperature, humidity and air quality details. Though it looks like a Govt. of Maharashtra initiative, members from other states who may download this app and use it can confirm if it is fully functional for them as well.
I think this app is also useful for farmers. For us it may be a good tool while going out on long drives.

    Re: Useful Apps for Smartphones

Dear All, diverging a bit from the source. The following are some of the apps / tools / software which i am finding useful during lockdown. These are extremely helpful to you in case you attend web conferencing meetings and more so for your kids who are nowadays attending online classes.

Pain area: You want to conveniently record the web lectures or meetings for future references. Some web conferencing apps have recording facility but can be done by the host only. You need to request host to record and then share a link.

    1. Loom: This is a screen recording software which can be downloaded and also has a chrome extension. So once a meeting starts you can use controls on chrome to start recording. It gives option to record only a part of the screen or a particular tab on the screen. You will have to get used to some of the functions as in some modes it may not record you toggling between various screens. The data gets saved on the cloud.
Advantages: You can start recording fast. Gets saved on the cloud and you can share the recording by sharing a link.
Loom is great for creating your own lectures with your own webcam capture placed in any corner you like. Great for pre-recorded lectures.
Disadvantages: If your internet goes down during a recording you will not be able to save it as the same is saved on cloud.
Zoom meeting does not get recorded using loom as per my experience.

My daughter has been using this. Visit https://www.loom.com/

    2. XBox Game Bar: Since i wanted only wanted screen recording software to record Zoom session lectures i found this alternative. This is inbuilt in windows 10 and can be invoked using Windows + G. My daughter uses this to record Zoom sessions.
Advantage: No need to ask permission from host to record. Recordings are saved on local drive.
Disadvantages: Found the saved file very bulky. i guess i may need some settings tweak. Recording may stop if you toggle between different screens.

Watch Kevin take you through how to use XBox Game Bar and settings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVJsm_000c0

There are other screen recording softwares like OBS etc which are more powerful. The guy in the game bar link above has other videos evaluating other options too.

I feel these tools are a boon for recording lectures and the brush through for more clarity or to brush up before exams.

Do let me know if any member is using a better option.

    Re: Useful Apps for Smartphones

Those are some handy tips Neelay!

Infact, the Xbox Console Companion is pretty nifty. My son aspires to start recording his XBox One gaming sessions along with his audio / commentary for uploading to YouTube. A lot of gamers do that. So the XBox Console Companion application on Windows allows him to stream his game from the Xbox to PC via Wifi, allowing him to attach the game controller to the PC vide a USB cable. Then he starts the screen recording along with recording his voice. Its a nice built in solution and I found the recorded voice quality to be great. But as you mentioned, the recording is heavy, I guess because of higher resolution and voice quality.

My cable set top box is also routed through the Xbox One, so I can stream TV to my laptop as well if I want to and the audio is streamed as well.

Not sure if the size of the file has something to do with settings. I saw a 1 hour session video file which was 13 GB. That's more than a Bluray movie. So I use "Handbrake" - a freeware - to convert to a lighter file.
